Brick

Brick Is A Timeless Choice

The use of brick, first discovered in Southern Turkey and Jericho, dates back to some time between 7,000 BC and 3,000 BC, depending on which article you read. (What’s 4,000 years among friends?) Regardless of the actual date, brick has obviously been used as a building material for a very long time!

In North America, bricks were used as the primary building material before the United States became a nation. Some of the brick buildings constructed in the 1600’s and 1700’s are still standing today, including St. Luke’s Church (Smithfield, VA), often referred to as the Old Brick Church.

In fact, brick’s durability was the reason behind President George Washington’s mandate that brick or stone be used for wall construction in the capital city’s row houses almost 220 years ago.

Today, brick is still a popular building material choice. With modern technology and new materials being introduced, there is a wide variety of brick colors, shapes and sizes to choose from for your construction job or home improvement project.

Clay Brick

Clay brick has been around for thousands of years. In fact, it’s the oldest building material manufactured by man. Combined with its energy efficiency and natural ingredients, brick is one of the most sustainable building materials available.

Clay brick is made from clay and shale, some of the most abundant materials on earth, and then fired in a kiln at up to 2,000° F. By going through a chemical-transforming, vitrification process in the kiln, the minerals in the clay/shale unit fuse together and become a material that is sustainable, durable and needs virtually no maintenance. Brick is a classic beauty that you confidently can use in any of your home improvement projects.

Old Carolina® Brick Co.

Old Carolina® Brick has preserved the ancient art of making brick by hand. Although their operation is modernized and automated, they continue to use the process of throwing the clay by hand into wooden moulds. Their skilled mud throwers form a clump of clay into a wedge shape, roll it in sand, and drop it into a wooden mould. This hand moulding operation imparts distinctive folds, finger marks and other surface irregularities which make each brick individually and uniquely characterized.

Old Carolina® bricks are fired with clean, efficient natural gas in a modern tunnel kiln to assure a consistent high quality and structurally durable product. They have the same warm and earthy colors found in brick made hundreds of years ago.
