Welcome To The Stone Veneer Age
Stone is the oldest construction material known to mankind. The most ancient remaining dry-stone structures are scattered throughout the world, such as the Egyptian pyramids and Peruvian temples. The main drawback of using natural stone in construction is the expense of cutting and transporting it due to its weight. Plus the building process is labor intensive. As a result, stone veneer, which was first introduced in the late 19th century, has become our modern stonework product of choice.
Stone veneer can be made from natural stone as well as manufactured stone. Natural stone veneer is made from real stone that is quarried and cut to a consistent thickness and weight for use as a veneer. Manufactured stone veneer is fabricated by pouring a lightweight concrete mix into rubber forms and colored with pigments that makes it resemble real stone. Natural and manufactured stone veneers are installed the same way. They are attached to walls with a veneer stone mortar.
We offer a wide assortment of natural and manufactured stone veneers at both our Phoenix and Buckeye locations. Be sure to stop by either location to see our stone samples and displays. Our knowledgeable staff will be able to answer any questions you have about the stone products.
Preach Building Supply carries the tools and materials you’ll need to complete your stone veneer projects.
Manufactured Stone Veneer
Manufactured stone veneer is a man-made product using cement, lightweight aggregates and pigmented dyes that is molded and colored to simulate the color and texture of natural stone. It is much lighter than traditional natural stone or full brick.
The realistic look of the product is the number one reason for manufactured stone’s popularity. If color consistency is important for your project, manufactured stone will be a wise choice. Other benefits include that it’s easy to install due to its light weight and flat back design, and it’s usually priced less than natural stone. Many manufactured stone companies warranty their product for 50 years.

Natural Stone Veneer
Traditional stone masonry is rarely used today because of the cost to quarry, cut and transport it. Most modern stonework is made into thin, flat panels known as stone veneer. It is used as a protective and decorative covering for exterior or interior vertical walls and surfaces. The veneer is typically 1 inch thick and must weigh less than 15 pounds per square foot so that no additional structural supports will be required.
Stone veneer comes in a variety of patterns like fieldstone and ledgestone. Part of the beauty of natural stone is the variations due to mineral content, size, and thickness. This uniqueness is usually not duplicated. Natural stone is a natural product that requires little in the way of maintenance.
If you want to use stone veneer in a water application such as pools or fountains, it is recommended that you use only natural stone. Pool chemicals and constant moisture will cause manufactured stone to deteriorate over time.
